Zine and Wine

The Three Daws, Town Pier Square, Gravesend

Zine and Wine is an event to celebrate International Women's Day 2024. The event will take place in The Bridge Room at The Three Daws Pub, Gravesend on Friday 8th March between 6pm - 9pm. The event is hosted by Cosima Richards who is a local Gravesend based textile artist.

All attendees will have the chance to create their very own Zine and badges. This is an event FOR women and run BY women with the aim to explore the intersections of feminism.

Bring your mum, bring your sister, bring your girlfriend, bring your nan and bring your mates! Everyone is welcome.

Are you sick of the burden of contraception, are you sick of mansplaining, are you sick of weaponised incompetence? If so, then this is the event for you! There is power in solidarity and there is power in being heard.

This is an opportunity to meet likeminded people. As well as discuss and digest the challenges and obstacles women face in 2024.

What is a Zine?

A Zine is a small self published booklet in which people share information and stories they are passionate about. Zine's have a rich history of being a tool to empower and challenge the status quo. Zine's use collage, newspapers, magazines, painting and drawing. and can be embellished with tape, stickers... Whatever you want! Once your Zine has been made you will be shown how to Stitch bind.

You can make a badge with a catchy slogan as a memento of your International Womens Day celebration.

All materials will be provided.

There will be a spotify jam session so you can vibe while you create

You will be offered a complimentary glass of Prosecco on arrival (non-alcoholic beverages for non- drinkers will also be provided)

Revamp Your Kitchen Cupboard Doors - An International Women’s Day Event

Art Is For All Studios, St George’s Shopping Centre, Gravesend

Revamp Your Kitchen Cupboard Doors (IWD)

We take great pleasure in introducing you to Angela Steele from O-W-E-C.I.C whose company creates employment and training opportunities for Women in Construction. On Friday 8th March, Angela is offering 2, 1 hour, taster sessions for those wanting to learn new, or enhance existing revamping skills.

Revamping is a great way to breathe new life into good furniture and kitchen cupboard doors – and it’s amazing how a simple lick of chalk paint can completely transform an old chair, cupboard door, or table. Follow along with this helpful ‘how to revamp your furniture with chalk paint’. You will be carefully guided, and you’ll have your second-hand furniture looking as good as new in no time at all…

How will I be taught?
You will be taught in a very practical hands-on way, using lots of resources. You will be involved in group work, sharing the materials and equipment on your individual project. You will be allowed to experiment, try new ideas and be creative.

What do I need to bring?
Old clothes you don’t mind getting paint on, and closed toe shoes

What can I do next?
O-W-E-C.I.C offer courses in interior decorating, tiling, wallpapering, and using power tools and revamping and recycling with paint on your own piece.

What do I need to join the course?
Just an interest in revamping your old furniture. This course is suitable for those who want inspiration for their own projects at home or those who wish to start looking into the first steps in starting to do revamping and recycling commercially. This could be complete beginners or those with some experience.

Find out more about Angela and her company: OPPORTUNITIES WITH EXPERIENCE O-W-E-C.I.C – Creating Employment and Training Opportunities for Women in Construction Trades within South East England (o-w-e-cic.org)

Flotsam & Jetsam

Flotsam & Jetsam

The Woodville Studio, Civic Centre

FLOTSAM & JETSAM
A hopeful, adventure story about two very different creatures that must learn to work together.
Visual theatre with original music and delightful puppetry.

Flotsam floats, Jetsam sinks-Both their worlds are on the brinks,
The jagged arcs of waves and sharks-Chase them both in minds and hearts.

They must break through their tears and fears-And worries of a thousand years,
To find what’s true and out of the blue-Discover the other and a friend that’s new.

Flotsam is soft, flexible, laid back. She slides and glides through life on the ice. Jetsam is the opposite, his insectile body is stiff and nervy, alert and watchful, suspicious of all in his forest home. And then comes the weather… and they are both cast adrift in a world that is strange to them and full of a range of dangers. Finally washed up on the same island beach they must discover the other and work out how they can work together.

Suitable for everyone from 4 – 104.

Duration: 45 Minutes
Story: Lempen Puppet Theatre
Puppeteers Liz und Daniel Lempen
Direction:  Mark Whitaker
Music: Chris Davies

‘Mughal Miniatures’ Walkabout is upbeat and fun, with performers in sumptuous regal costumes creating vibrant and colourful mini-worlds of dance, music and puppetry. Evoking scenes of Indian princely courts and lush gardens, and the glory of the Mughal period with a contemporary twist, undercutting expectations and delighting and surprising passers-by. Laika The Space Dog

Fort Gardens, Gravesend

Laika is a stray dog on the streets of Moscow.

She is selected by the Space Agency to be trained up for the Sputnik 2 space mission and will become the first animal to orbit Earth. Her training is rigorous and with the help of her friend from the Sputnik Canine Support team, Laika prepares to blast off!

Laika The Space Dog is a lively family show that retells the story of Laika, the first dog in space (with a twist)! Audiences are invited to see an alternative ending whereby Laika undertakes the journey of a lifetime. Inspired by the true story of Laika, this show offers an alternative to the tragic tale allowing Laika to zoom through the asteroid belt, meet Space apes and finally return to earth in a shower of glory.

Featuring a beautifully crafted puppet, a riveting soundtrack and a few surprises, Laika the Space Dog will delight children over the age of 3 and their adults too. Using gentle, light-hearted interaction our performer allows the viewers to become immersed in a magical voyage.
