Each month we take pleasure in introducing one of Gravesham’s many creative souls. We ask them what inspires their work and seek out their personal cultural tips and highlights.
Mandy Hare - Creative Consultant
In your own words, how would you describe your creative work?
I am a creative consultant which covers a multitude of sins. I write bids and run festivals, I prepare strategy and write plays. I am committed to working with artists and creatives within their communities to ensure that arts and culture is a priority. It is always creativity and culture that invigorate a community making it a desirable place to be, artists must be recognised as the key driver for that change.
When did you first discover your passion for art/writing/photography?
My parents took me to see a play called The Amorous Prawn when I was 8. I was mesmerised (I have watched it since and - well - let’s just say I may have changed my mimd!). When they told me that I could actually get a job in theatre I never looked back.
What's the creative process?
A terrifying deadline normally does the trick. I may have plenty to time to do a piece of work and it will percolate - I can procrastinate on an industrial scale. Once the end is in sight however it all seems to come together to write, plan, create.
What does a typical day look like to you?
I like to start early and I like to have a plan of the day. Clearing off emails and quick wins before taking the dogs for a walk and settling into the meat of the day when we get back. The joy of this line of work is that no two days are the same. I could be talking to artists, meeting with collaborators, writing funding bids or researching new work - it’s great!
What have you learned most about yourself in recent times?
That I like to be challenged and develop new ideas. I have recently left a very enjoyable, reasonably well paid job to resume my freelance practise. I have learnt that I don’t enjoy being too comfortable it turns out!
Do you have any wisdom you can share with others who are thinking of launching a creative business?
Do it! It will challenge and energise you but you will meet amazing people who have amazing projects to share with you.
What is on your mind right now?
