Each month we take pleasure in introducing one of Gravesham’s many creative souls. We ask them what inspires their work and seek out their personal cultural tips and highlights.
Zack Davies - Poet & Host
In your own words, how would you describe your work
I host an open mic night for poetry and spoken word at the Mole Hole micropub, Gravesend. I write and perform poems, usually aiming for a slightly twisted humour.
How do the project idea come about?
I heard through a friend that the Mole Hole were looking for someone to host an event, so I put myself forward and things went from there. I'd been toying with the idea of hosting for a while, so I feel lucky to have been in the right place at the right time. The Mole Hole is a great place for these kind of events and they've been really supportive.
When did you first discover your passion for creativity?
I started songwriting seriously in my teens, which has decayed into writing poetry. "Passion" isn't a great word for how I feel these days. I'm largely trying to overcome the frustrations of my own limitations and the frustrations of not having enough things to go out and do.
What's the creative process?
Psyche myself up to perform somewhere, panic about what I'm going to read then write something new! I jot down notes on my phone then develop them later. Preferred writing environments: In a pub, or in bed the night before the gig.
What does a typical day look like to you?
I have a non-creative job and kids, so my typical day is unremarkable. I tend to write later in the evening when everyone else is in bed.
What have you learned most about yourself in recent times?
I'm less invested than I used to be in the idea that art ought to be "good". It's nice when it is, and there are still things I think are bad, but I'm more interested in making opportunities for something unusual to happen, or a space for people to tell their story.
Do you have any wisdom you can share with others who are thinking of launching a creative business?
I don't have any business tips - you need to be pretty brave to try and make money from poetry. My main poetry event bugbear is very long sections with no breaks. Give the audience frequent opportunities to get to the bar - the venue will thank you for this too!
What is on your mind right now?
The same as every poet - I need to stop procrastinating, pull my finger out and write more.
Zack’s cultural highlights
Film
I’ve just looked through my Netflix viewing history for the last year and I wouldn't recommend much of it! The Big Short is a notable exception.
Podcast
Poetry-wise, I recommend Lyric Life, The Poetry Gods, Words in Chalk and Dead Darlings.
Books
My biggest influence was probably The Book of Insults by Nancy McPhee, though whether it was a good influence or not is debatable.
TV
I enjoy watching Mystery Science Theatre 3000 with my boys.
Also, Nate: A One-Man Show on Netflix is fantastic.
Music
Elvis Costello and Public Enemy were my biggest influences words-wise,
but I have an abiding soft spot for self-indulgent '80s shred guitar
